Project I - Run to You

The truth is, running is transformative, and in many ways, it is arguably a more accessible sport. Still, the sport of running comes with highs, lows, and many opinions and on an individual level requires time, commitment, and some capacity for support.

Notwithstanding this, running can be a gateway to health, healing, well-being and recovery at the individual and collective. For this project, we want to capture all of it through the experiences of 15 BLack women runners in Toronto.

We spent April-November 2024 during the training months to document the experiences of a group of women and the impact running had on their self-esteem and what it means to them to be at home in their bodies.

As a community-based project, we did not know what to expect but were blown away by the support and attention the project received. We learned of its importance, breadth and applicability to different groups and settings.

Project Run to You was the first to launch the initiative into research and community events and activations, and something we will always come back to you - because home is nothing without you, and no matter how you get there, whether running or some other form of movement, coming home to you is the goal.

Photographers  Chrris Lowe and Britney Holungc captured images during and after the runners' training season and races between April and November 2024. The photographers for this project are Chrris Lowe and Britney Holung.
